The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

😏 Informal
Translation
A fart. Urdu and Hindi share so much vocabulary they are sometimes considered registers of the same language.
In a Sentence
Kis ne paad maari?
"Who farted?"
💨 What people actually say
پاد مارنا (pād mārnā) — the same construction as Hindi.
👶 The kid word
پوں (pon) — the sound word.
🤬 The rude version
پادو — 'farter,' an insult for someone weak or useless.
🎩 The polite version
گیس (gas) — the loanword, universally used to stay polite.
🗺️ Regional variations
Punjabi says پھوکن; Pashto uses ټس; Sindhi has its own term.
📖 Literally speaking
پاد مارنا = 'to strike a fart.'
🧐 Fartology
Urdu's registers split sharply: Persianised vocabulary for formality, Hindustani roots for the body.
⚠️ Use with caution
In formal Urdu company, only گیس. پاد is street-level.
Cultural Note
Urdu is written right-to-left in Nastaliq script, one of the most calligraphically beautiful scripts in the world. It is the language of Mughal court poetry, of ghazals, of Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Also: paad.
Nastaliq calligraphy. Court poetry. Also this. The range is impressive.
