About

My children have asked me how to say the word fart in other languages.  That is how this site was born.

Language is one of the things that makes us human. Across thousands of years and thousands of cultures, we have invented words for love, war, God, home, happiness, grief and the meaning of life.

We have also invented an extraordinary number of ways to say fart.

Welcome to Fartography, an entirely unnecessary but surprisingly fascinating journey through the words, expressions, euphemisms and noises the world uses for passing gas.

From polite terminology to playground slang, ancient expressions to modern insults, we're mapping humanity one fart at a time.

Because languages may divide us. Borders may separate us. Customs may confuse us.

But everybody farts.
