The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

pieru
Stop 7
Finland
Finnish
pieru
/PEE-eh-roo/
IPA /ˈpie̯ru/
🗣️ Everyday
Translation
Just a fart. Unchanged for at least seventy years.
In a Sentence
Kuka piersi?
"Who farted?"
💨 What people actually say
Päästää pieru — 'to let out a fart.' Finns are unbothered.
👶 The kid word
pierunen or piru-pieru, singsong and harmless.
🤬 The rude version
paskahaju-pieru — a 'shit-smell fart.'
🎩 The polite version
ilmavaivat — 'air troubles.' Wonderfully euphemistic.
🗺️ Regional variations
Savo dialect stretches the vowels until the word itself sounds longer than the event.
📖 Literally speaking
ilmavaivat = 'air ailments.'
🧐 Fartology
Sauna culture means Finnish has strong opinions about farting in enclosed steam rooms. All of them negative.
⚠️ Use with caution
Say ilmavaivat at the doctor, pieru everywhere else.
Cultural Note
Finnish has a proverb: kadota kuin pieru Saharaan — 'disappears like a fart in the Sahara.' A language with fart idioms is a language with its priorities in order.
Direct. Quietly proud. The word has existed for generations and requires no further improvement.
