The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

fis
Stop 6
Sweden
Swedish
fis
/feess/
IPA /fiːs/
🗣️ Everyday
Translation
A fart, specifically a quieter one. Swedish also has fjärt (louder) and prutt (childish).
In a Sentence
Var det du som fisade?
"Was that you who farted?"
💨 What people actually say
Släppa en fis — 'to release a fart.'
👶 The kid word
prutt — soft and bouncy, the nursery word.
🤬 The rude version
fisa som en älg — 'to fart like a moose.'
🎩 The polite version
gaser or väderspänning. Clinical Swedish.
🗺️ Regional variations
Skåne, sitting close to Denmark, borrows prut.
📖 Literally speaking
släppa en fis = 'to let a fart loose.'
🧐 Fartology
A fis is classically the quiet kind; a brakfis is the loud one. Swedish has taxonomy.
⚠️ Use with caution
Perfectly ordinary among friends; still not fika conversation with your boss.
Cultural Note
In Swedish, fart means speed. It is printed on road signs across the country. Full fart means full speed. Swedish infrastructure is a constant source of delight for anglophone teenagers.
Calm. Orderly. The Swedes have several words for this, appropriately categorised by volume.
