The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

Netherlands
Dutch
scheet
/skeet/
IPA /sxeːt/
🗣️ Everyday
Translation
A fart. Though note: in Dutch, vaart means journey and fart is not a word at all.
In a Sentence
Wie heeft er een scheet gelaten?
"Who let a fart?"
💨 What people actually say
Een scheet laten — 'to let a fart.' Delivered without embarrassment, this being the Netherlands.
👶 The kid word
een windje or poepje — a little wind, a little poop-ette.
🤬 The rude version
knalscheet — a 'bang fart.'
🎩 The polite version
winderigheid or gasvorming. Pharmacy Dutch.
🗺️ Regional variations
Flemish Belgium prefers een prot or een veest.
📖 Literally speaking
windje = 'little wind.'
🧐 Fartology
Dutch directness extends here: many households simply announce it rather than deny it.
⚠️ Use with caution
poepje is fine from a child and odd from a colleague.
Cultural Note
The Dutch also have wind laten (to let wind) for polite contexts. The Dutch invented many things: the microscope, the stock exchange, discretion about flatulence.
Pragmatic. The Netherlands has spent centuries holding back the sea. A fart is not going to faze them.
