The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

🇪🇸
pedo
Stop 3
Spain
Spanish
pedo
/PEH-doh/
IPA /ˈpeðo/
🗣️ Everyday
Translation
A fart. Also, in slang, being very drunk. The Venn diagram is a circle.
In a Sentence
¿Quién se tiró un pedo?
"Who let one go?"
💨 What people actually say
Tirarse un pedo — 'to throw oneself a fart.' What everyone actually says.
👶 The kid word
pedito — the diminutive. A little fart. Devastatingly cute.
🤬 The rude version
Te has tirado un pedo que tumba a un caballo — 'a fart that would fell a horse.'
🎩 The polite version
ventosidad or expulsar gases. Clinical, chilly, safe.
🗺️ Regional variations
Mexico: pedo means practically everything — ¿qué pedo? is 'what's up?', and estar pedo is 'to be drunk.' Spain keeps it literal. Catalonia says pet.
📖 Literally speaking
tirarse un pedo = 'to throw oneself a fart.'
🧐 Fartology
Catalan band Els Pets (The Farts) have been touring since 1988 and are genuinely good.
⚠️ Use with caution
In Mexico, ni pedo means 'oh well.' Do not translate literally in a business meeting.
Cultural Note
In Catalonia they say pet — same as the French, different country. The Catalan rock band Els Pets (The Farts) has been performing since 1988 and is by all accounts very good.
Cheerful. Unembarrassed. The correct response to a loud fart at a Spanish dinner table is to continue the conversation.
