The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

🗣️ Everyday
Translation
To fart (verb). The noun form is jamba.
In a Sentence

"Who farted?"
💨 What people actually say
Kujamba — the standard Swahili verb.
👶 The kid word
mshuzi or a soft jamba said playfully.

kutoa gesi — 'to release gas.'
🗺️ Regional variations
Coastal Kenyan and Tanzanian Swahili agree on kujamba; inland dialects add their own.
📖 Literally speaking
kutoa gesi = 'to give out gas.'
🧐 Fartology
Swahili's noun classes mean a fart can be pluralised as mashuzi, which is exactly as unpleasant as it sounds.
⚠️ Use with caution
Shuzi is vulgar. Kujamba is the neutral verb.
Cultural Note
Swahili is spoken across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, parts of the DRC, and coastal communities throughout the region. Kujamba travels across a large portion of the continent.
Practical. Pan-continental. Exactly as useful as claimed.
