The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

🗣️ Everyday
Translation
Đánh = to hit/strike; rắm = fart. Literally, 'to strike a fart.' Vietnam turned this into an act of violence against the air itself.
In a Sentence
Ai vừa đánh rắm vậy?
"Who just farted?"
💨 What people actually say
Đánh rắm — 'to strike a fart.' Also địt, which is far ruder.
👶 The kid word
xì hơi — 'to hiss air.'
🤬 The rude version
địt — in northern Vietnamese it means fart; in the south it is a serious obscenity. Choose carefully.
🎩 The polite version
trung tiện — Sino-Vietnamese, formal, medical.
🗺️ Regional variations
The địt problem is the classic north–south trap in Vietnamese.
📖 Literally speaking
đánh rắm = 'to hit a fart.'
🧐 Fartology
Vietnamese verbs of striking (đánh) attach to many involuntary acts — you strike a fart, a sleep, a tooth-brushing.
⚠️ Use with caution
Do not use địt in Saigon. Genuinely. Stick to đánh rắm.
Cultural Note
Vietnamese is tonal with six tones. Rắm is specifically 'fart' — no other reading. This is one of the few Vietnamese words where tonal ambiguity is not a social risk.
Percussive. The language has chosen violence. This feels right.
