The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

पाद
Stop 20
India
Hindi
पाद
/paad/
IPA /paːd̪/
😏 Informal
Translation
Directly onomatopoeic — the word sounds like the event.
In a Sentence
किसने पाद मारी?
"Who farted?"
💨 What people actually say
पाद मारना (pād mārnā) — 'to strike a fart.'
👶 The kid word
पों (pon) — the sound word small children use.
🤬 The rude version
पादना band kar — a blunt, impatient command.
🎩 The polite version
गैस (gas) — the English loanword does all the polite work.
🗺️ Regional variations
Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati and Nepali all use پاد / પાદ / पाद. Tamil goes elsewhere entirely with vāyu.
📖 Literally speaking
पाद मारना = 'to hit a fart.'
🧐 Fartology
Ayurveda names apāna vāyu, the downward wind, one of five vital airs — farting is a recognised category of medical theory.
⚠️ Use with caution
Say gas in polite company; पाद is playground vocabulary.
Cultural Note
Sanskrit had pardate — one of the oldest documented forms of the Indo-European fart root, 3,500 years old. The tradition continues uninterrupted.
Ancient. Earthy. Survived the entire span of recorded civilisation.
