The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

방귀 뀌다 (banggwi kkwida) — 'to do a fart.'
👶 The kid word
뽕 (ppong) — the cartoon sound, and the toddler word.

가스가 찼다 — 'gas has built up.'
🗺️ Regional variations

📖 Literally speaking
방귀 뀌다 uses a verb reserved almost exclusively for farting.
🧐 Fartology
The proverb 방귀 뀐 놈이 성낸다 — 'the one who farted gets angry' — describes the guilty party blaming everyone else.
⚠️ Use with caution
Age hierarchy matters more than the word: never joke about this with a senior colleague.
Cultural Note
Korean proverb: 방귀 뀐 놈이 성낸다 — 'The one who farted gets angry first.' The guilty party often goes immediately on offense. Applicable well beyond flatulence.
Direct. There is a proverb. Korea takes flatulence accountability seriously.
