The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

gooz
Stop 16
Iran
Persian / Farsi
gooz
/gooz/
IPA /ɡuːz/
😏 Informal
Translation
A fart, especially a loud one. The silent variety is chos.
In a Sentence
اون گوز از کی بود؟
"Whose fart was that?"
💨 What people actually say
Gooz dādan — 'to give a fart.'
👶 The kid word
guzu — the diminutive, used with small children.
🤬 The rude version
gooz-e sag — 'dog fart,' meaning worthless nonsense.
🎩 The polite version
bād — simply 'wind.'
🗺️ Regional variations
Dari in Afghanistan shares gooz; Tajik keeps the same root.
📖 Literally speaking
gooz dādan = 'to give a fart.'
🧐 Fartology
Persian poetry is famously refined, which is why classical satirists used gooz to puncture pomposity.
⚠️ Use with caution
Deeply rude in formal Iranian settings, where indirectness is the whole grammar of politeness.
Cultural Note
Gooz has migrated into Persian idiom as a general dismissal — something trivial or beneath concern, roughly 'it doesn't amount to a fart.' The diminutive goozoo is an affectionate tease.
Earthy. Idiomatic. Doing more linguistic work than its definition would suggest.
