The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

Polish
pierdnięcie
/peer-DNYEH-nyeh/
IPA /pʲerdˈɲɛnt͡ɕɛ/
🗣️ Everyday
Translation
A fart. The verb pierdnąć is perfective (one fart); pierdzieć is imperfective (ongoing).
In a Sentence
Kto pierdnął?
"Who farted?"
💨 What people actually say
Puścić bąka — 'to release a bumblebee.' The most charming euphemism in Europe.
👶 The kid word
bąk — just the bumblebee. Children use it happily.
🤬 The rude version
pierdnąć, pierdolić and its enormous derivative family. Handle with care.
🎩 The polite version
wzdęcia or gazy.
🗺️ Regional variations
Silesian says pierdnyć; the phrase puścić bąka is universal across Poland.
📖 Literally speaking
puścić bąka = 'to let a bumblebee go.'
🧐 Fartology
The pierd- root spawned pierdolić, one of Polish's most versatile profanities, meaning roughly everything.
⚠️ Use with caution
bąk is delightful. Anything starting pierdol- will get you removed from the wedding.
Cultural Note
Polish shares the Slavic perd- root with Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, and Serbian — all descending from the same Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
Matter-of-fact. The word is not shameful. It is simply accurate.
