The Fartographic Method

Fartography is silly.

The research isn’t.

Languages are messy. Words change between countries, cities, generations and families. A textbook translation may be technically correct while sounding completely ridiculous to a native speaker.

So we don’t just ask, “What is the translation of fart?”

We ask:

What do people actually say?

Where possible, Fartography checks words and expressions with native speakers, dictionaries and linguistic sources, records regional differences, and distinguishes between formal language, slang, children’s words and expressions.

If we get something wrong, please tell us.

Fartography is, like language itself, a work in progress.

Translation
Russian grammar distinguishes between a single fart and a habit of farting. This level of precision is either admirable or alarming.
In a Sentence
Кто пёрнул?
"Who farted?"
💨 What people actually say
Пёрнуть (pyornut') — to let one rip. Пукнуть (puknut') is the softer everyday verb.
👶 The kid word
пукнуть — what mothers and children say.
🤬 The rude version
пердеть (perdet') — coarse, and a whole family of insults grows from it.
🎩 The polite version
газы or метеоризм. Doctor's office only.
🗺️ Regional variations
Ukrainian пукати and Belarusian пярдзець share the root; Russian slang перднуть is universal.
📖 Literally speaking
пёрнуть comes from Proto-Slavic *pьrděti, cousin of Latin pedere.
🧐 Fartology
Old Russian court records treat public farting as an insult to rank. It was litigated.
⚠️ Use with caution
пердеть is genuinely vulgar. пукнуть is safe with grandparents.
Cultural Note
Perdet' is one of the most stable words in the Indo-European family — barely changed from the Proto-Indo-European root *perd- over thousands of years. Priorities.
Direct. Grammatically comprehensive. Slightly terrifying in its specificity.
